Five of My Favorite Skillshare Classes

Hi there! How are all of your weeks?

I wanted to tell you about a website that I’ve found extremely helpful recently. If you haven’t already heard of Skillshare, it’s a great way to learn new techniques and expand your knowledge. They offer a free month of service with unlimited classes on everything from business to illustration techniques. I’m a total fan. I spent a few months going through and watching anything and everything I found interesting. After having done that, I thought it’d be a good idea to compile a list of my favorites and share them with all of you. So, these are my top 5 Skillshare reviews, as of October 2014. Happy learning!

  1. Spencer Charles — Techniques for Lettering with Illustrator
Hands down, the most helpful class for digital lettering. Good production quality and the music is strangely therapeutic. He covers how to set up guides (the right way), letter structure, and ways to embellish your type and make it look awesome. Watching the timelapse video of how he made class art is phenomenal, don’t miss it!
  2. Paula Scher — Brand Identity: Design Adaptable Branding Systems
This may not be incredibly relevant to you if you’re not a designer. However, Paula Scher is one bad-ass lady and that’s why you should know about her anyways. I love that someone with the experience she has is sharing her knowledge on branding. A wonderful birds-eye view of branding, and watching her case study videos are like peeking into a bit of design history. Thank you Paula!
  3. Brandon Rike — Lettering Made Simple: Efficient Methods for Custom Type
I stumbled on this class because the title interested me. Afterwards, I felt a lot more knowledgeable about making custom type in Illustrator, and something about his techniques seemed familiar and intuitive to me. Brandon does a great job of taking you through the process of modifying type — from choosing a typeface, modifying it, to adding texture and finally applying it to an image. Great tutorial!
  4. Lydia Nichols — The Best of Both Worlds: Leveraging Photoshop and Illustrator In Your Work
Ever get asked the question, “What program do you use? Photoshop or Illustrator, mainly?” The next time I get asked this, I’d be inclined to refer them to this Skillshare class. Lydia’s illustrations are adorable to see in the making, and shows off how to use both programs to achieve beautiful results. Great class for anyone learning to vectorize sketches and incorporate textures.
  5. James Victore — Radical Typography: What Do You Have to Say?
An exuberant personality, James Victore is one of my favorite designers to follow. He is passionate about messaging and gets you pretty riled up to say something meaningful! I especially loved seeing his methods for creating new and interesting type out of unconventional materials.

Let me know what you guys think in the comments! Also, if you have any classes to recommend, feel free to mention those too. I’m always up for recommendations!
